Campus Guide

Each block is used for a different purpose, X block for business students, Z block for the engineering students and Q block for lectures!

On this page you find useful information on where to go and how to find your way around UWE.

An overhead view of a first-year student essentials flat-lay arranged on a pale grey fabric surface: neatly folded UWE-red hoodie, compact laptop, noise-cancelling headphones, a small academic planner, keycard with lanyard, and a reusable water bottle with subtle condensation on its matte surface. A tidy set of color-coded sticky notes and gel pens frame the scene, while a slim calculator and a USB-C charger hint at study life. Soft natural window light from the left creates gentle, even illumination and delicate, realistic shadows, emphasizing textures of cotton, metal, and plastic. Photographic realism, clean and modern composition with rule-of-thirds placement, evokes a practical, organized, and reassuring mood, ideal for introducing a student starter kit.
A bright, modern university accommodation kitchen corner, with spotless white cabinets, a compact stainless-steel kettle on a dark laminate worktop, and a small corkboard pinned with a printed weekly meal plan and shopping list. A single ceramic bowl of fresh fruit adds muted color, while a neatly stacked set of plates and a lone mug sit on a drying rack. Soft morning sunlight slips through an unseen window, creating subtle reflections on the metal appliances and soft shadows along the backsplash. Photographic realism, shot from a slightly elevated angle with sharp focus throughout, conveys a clean, welcoming, and practical atmosphere that reflects everyday student living at UWE.
A neatly organized study desk in a modern student flat, featuring a slim silver laptop open to a university portal, a stack of pastel-colored revision cards, and a clear acrylic pen pot filled with highlighters and fine-liners. The desk is a light oak surface positioned beneath a large window overlooking a softly blurred city campus. Diffused overcast daylight bathes the scene, creating soft, professional lighting with gentle shadows under objects. A minimalist UWE-branded notebook lies open with a tidy weekly schedule visible. Photographic realism, shot at eye level with shallow depth of field, keeps the foreground crisp while the background dissolves into soft bokeh, conveying a calm, focused, and studious atmosphere suitable for a first-year guide homepage hero image.

Getting Around Frenchay Campus

Campus Buses

Local buses stop right outside Frenchay Campus, linking you with Bristol city centre, Filton and surrounding areas. Services are frequent in term time, and student tickets and day passes can make regular travel more affordable.

Metrobus Routes

The m1 and m3 metrobus routes serve Frenchay, with fast, reliable links to the city centre, UWE Glenside, and key hubs like Cabot Circus and Bristol Temple Meads. Stops are clearly marked around campus, and you can tap on with contactless or use app tickets.

Cycling to Campus

Frenchay is connected to local cycle paths and the wider Bristol cycle network, with secure bike racks and covered shelters near main buildings. Consider a good lock, lights and a helmet, and check UWE’s cycling maps to plan a safe, well-lit route.

Walking Routes

Once on campus, most key buildings are within a 5–10 minute walk. Follow the colour-coded signage, large campus maps and building codes (like 2B or 1D) to find your way, and allow extra time in your first few weeks while you learn the layout.

First-Year Navigation Tips

Key Buildings to Know

Start by learning the locations of essential spots like the Library (F Block), OneZone and the Students’ Union, the Business School, and main lecture theatres. Save a digital campus map on your phone so you can quickly check where you are between classes.

Using Maps and Signage

Use Google Maps or the UWE campus map to locate building codes and entrances before you set off. On campus, follow the tall directory boards and overhead signs, and don’t hesitate to ask staff or student ambassadors if you’re unsure.

Moving Between Campuses

If you have teaching at Glenside or Bower Ashton as well as Frenchay, plan your journeys in advance using bus and metrobus timetables. Factor in traffic at peak times, and aim to arrive early so you’re not rushing between sites.

Travel Accessibility

Most routes into and around Frenchay are step-free or ramped, with lift access in major buildings and marked crossing points on main roads. If you have specific mobility or accessibility needs, contact UWE’s support services to discuss the best routes and any adjustments.

Budget and Safety Tips

Look out for student travel discounts, group tickets and UWE travel schemes to reduce costs. When travelling early or late, stick to well-lit routes, walk or cycle with friends where possible, and keep an eye on the last bus or metrobus times so you’re not stranded.
